Legendary fiddler Maurice Lennon from Rossinver became a local champion in Illinois this year after he coached a group of American students to become All Ireland Scor Champions at the Fleadh in Cavan.
Son of the amazing 84 year old Ben Lennon, Maurice is fighting cancer and receiving treatment in the USA. Winner of the Gradam, the highest honour in traditional Irish music, Maurice has suffered from skin cancer for the past seven years but is still battling returning tumours. The fight for his health however has not hindered his creativity and wonderful talent.
The NorthWest Herald, newspaper for McHenry County, Illinois earlier this month ran a feature on his recent honour coaching a group from the Murphy Roche School of Music to All Ireland status.

The John Carty Festival Band
John Carty, one of the finest names in Irish traditional music launches his brand new Festival Band.
John is well known to traditional music fans and was awarded the TG4 Musician of the Year in 2003. In this new band he will showcase his unique fiddle, banjo and tenor guitar playing and is fortunate to have on board some of the finest talent that Irish music has to offer with every member bringing their own unique stamp to the overall sound. He is joined by Shane McGowan on guitar and vocals, Kevin Doherty on double bass, Ciarán Munnelly on snare drum, bodhrán, vocals and flute and James Carty on fiddle. Special guests include Colm Gannon on accordion, Maggie Carty on banjo, vocalist Daoiri Farrell, and banjo player and dancer Frankie Fox.
This gig has a real celebratory atmosphere as Carty and friends play a unique spectrum of traditional music with influences from the 1920s, old time, swing/jazz to O'Carolan and beyond. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)The opening concert of Shorelines Arts Festival features a trio of award-winning composers/performers; fiddler Liz Carroll (2011 TG4 Composer of the Year), accordionist Mairtín O’Connor (1995 AIB Traditional Musician of the Year) and guitarist Dave Flynn (2002 IMRO Composition Award Winner).
The Tune Makers will perform each other’s wonderful compositions as well as tunes by deceased composers, such as Ed Reavy, Vincent Broderick, Junior Crehan, Seán Ryan, Paddy O’Brien and Turlough O’Carolan. Some living composers who no longer perform in public, like Paddy Fahey and Finbarr Dwyer, will also be featured.
